Dental implants in one day: how immediate loading works and who can have it
Extraction, implants and fixed teeth on the same day. We explain what happens that day, the requirements, the options if you have little bone and what recovery is like.
In this article
- Immediate loading lets us carry out the extraction, place the implants and fit fixed teeth in a single day.
- There is no need to wait up to 6 months between extraction and implants, or a similar period for fixed teeth.
- It is suitable even with little bone; in cases of major bone loss, zygomatic implants are considered.
- It can be done under conscious sedation and paid over up to 48 months interest-free.
For years, replacing teeth with implants meant a long process: extraction, months of waiting for the bone to heal, placing the implants, waiting again and, finally, receiving the final teeth. In the meantime, many patients went through that stage with removable dentures or no teeth at all.
Immediate-load implants change that timeline. At Clínica Dental Peyrí we have worked with this system since 1986, and today it is the treatment chosen by most of our patients who need to replace several teeth or a full arch.
What is immediate loading?
Immediate loading is an implant technique in which fixed teeth are attached to the implants on the day of surgery, instead of waiting months for the implant to fuse with the bone.
It is possible because the implants are placed with enough primary stability , meaning they are firmly anchored from the start. A temporary fixed prosthesis is screwed onto them to spread chewing forces. Over time the bone bonds to the implant and, once integration is complete, the final prosthesis is fitted.
Treatment day, step by step
- 1. Free first visitWe study your case, review your medical history and carry out the tests needed to plan the treatment.
- 2. Anaesthetic and, if you wish, conscious sedationThe procedure is done under local anaesthetic. If you are afraid of the dentist or the treatment is long, you can have it with conscious sedation.
- 3. Extractions and implant placementIn the same procedure, teeth that cannot be saved are removed and the titanium implants are placed.
- 4. Fixed teeth the same dayThe temporary fixed prosthesis is screwed onto the implants. You leave the clinic with fixed teeth.
- 5. Follow-up and final prosthesisWe schedule check-ups and, once the implants have integrated, fit the final teeth matched in colour and shape.
Who can have it: requirements
Most adults who have lost teeth, or are about to, can be assessed for immediate loading. At the first visit we check, among other things:
- Bone quantity and quality, to make sure the implants are stable from day one.
- General health and regular medication, which can affect healing.
- Gum health: if there is active gum disease it should be treated first. We explain this on our page about periodontics.
- Habits such as smoking or teeth grinding, which should be controlled to protect the result.
What if I have little bone?
This is one of the most common questions. When teeth are lost, the bone that held them is gradually reabsorbed over the years, and many patients have been told elsewhere that they cannot have implants.
Our immediate implant system is suitable even if you have little bone. In cases of major bone loss in the upper jaw we consider zygomatic implants, which are anchored in the cheekbone and let you get your smile back in a single day.
Immediate loading vs conventional implants
| Aspect | Immediate loading | Conventional implants |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed teeth | The same day | After several months of waiting |
| Extractions and implants | In the same procedure | Often up to 6 months apart |
| Period with no teeth or a removable denture | No | Usual while waiting |
| With little bone | Suitable; zygomatic implants for major bone loss | Often requires bone grafts and more time |
Recovery and eating in the first days
On the day of treatment you can enjoy a soft dinner and quickly get back to normal life. During the first weeks, follow a few simple guidelines:
- A soft, lukewarm diet, avoiding very hard or sticky foods.
- Careful hygiene following the instructions we give you at the clinic.
- Avoid smoking, which slows healing.
- Attend your scheduled check-ups.
How much it costs and how to pay
The price depends on the number of implants, the type of prosthesis and whether additional techniques such as zygomatic implants are needed. That is why we do not give generic figures: at the free first visit we study your case and give you a fixed quote.
You can also spread the cost over up to 48 months interest-free.
